Founded in 2013, Artists at Albatross Reach is an artists’ colony, a laboratory for new work, and a place for the local community to jump inside the creative process and share work with professional art-makers from around the country.

Here’s how it works:  Artists are invited to be a part of a week-long session at our Sea Ranch, CA location.  Everyone brings ideas, instruments, even props, and most especially open minds.  When we all meet each other for the first time we brainstorm repertoire and ideas, and set goals that fit the individual group.  Everyone speaks about ways that they would like to stretch and be stretched in their work, and we plan accordingly.  At the end of the week, we host members of the vibrant local community in our living room performance space to check out the work we’ve done to share in our art and music-making.  Our community salon events include works-in-progress that the resident artists have created together, chamber music ranging from Beethoven to Brahms to John Adams, and local artists sharing their own work from poetry to flamenco guitar.

Then, over Memorial Day weekend, the artists from the current season return to our Sea Ranch spot to rehearse and perform finished versions of pieces created during our weeks together.  We curate a formal and fun concert at the Gualala Arts Center, offering open rehearsals during the popular Fine Arts fair and presenting an afternoon of brand new music alongside works like traditional chamber music, folk music, klezmer, scored silent film, poetry, jazz, and opera.

Our events and structure serve many communities. We’re delighted to provide space and opportunity for artists to stretch and explore past the limitations of a traditional concert experience, but we are equally thrilled to connect with the Mendonoma community, bringing a different kind of art and joyful entropy than anything around. Come be a part of our eclectic jamboree!
